Neighbors helping neighbors
December 9th, 2008 11:41 PM

In order to survive the new economy that has so many people wondering what is going to change and what will remain the same.

We can learn from history and remember how close people were in the early days, how large their families were and how happy they seemed to be. I think it came from understanding who needed what and providing what they had by sharing and caring and giving what others needed.

Change can be positive. Going back to basics and keeping in touch with your neighbors. Find out if they need you to lend a hand or just lend an ear.

See how much you can help local businesses by shopping locally.

Trade things or services with those around you in order to get what you each need.

Contact your church and find out if they have an increased amount of requests for assistance such as food and clothing for the needy. See how you can help.

If you have not already done so, bring a new, unwrapped toy to your local Salvation Army to be handed out to a needy child this Christmas.

Offer to help the elderly person on your block by taking out their trash or just stopping by or calling and listening to them.

Be a friendly co-worker and try to do something extra nice for someone at work, it will come back to you in a positive way.

Buy an extra 5 cans of food when you shop, leave them at the front counter or donation box for a local needy family.

Stop, listen and learn when others are talking, try to hear what they are trying to tell you. See if you can help them. Listening is a lost art. With texting, emailing and video games, many people prefer not to use the talking skills of communication.

By listening to others, shopping locally, helping your local people in need, you will improve the face of your local neighborhood and you will feel better about your own situation.

-Shop locally.
